Serviceberry is a favorite tree of native gardeners, birds, and anyone who sees this lovely tree in spring or fall.
This native tree grows to 25'-30' at a moderate rate, and makes a fantastic centerpiece in your songbird habitat, or as a beautiful understory tree in your naturalized woodland space. Growth habit is often multi-trunked, more like a large shrub, but can be gradually pruned to the shape of a small tree, if desired.
Serviceberry bursts into blossom in early spring, before the leaves emerge, and is covered in slightly fragrant, drooping clusters of white flowers - providing a welcome early-spring stop for pollinators.
Summer brings red berries, which ripen into a deep purple-black, and are LOVED by birds and wildlife. These berries can also be enjoyed by humans, and are often made into jams.
In Autumn, the Serviceberry rewards you yet again with long-lasting brilliant orange fall foliage. Deciduous.
Sun: Sun, Light Shade, Shade
Water: Prefers consistently moist, woodland soil. Tolerant of most Marietta soils and weather; water consistently during dry periods over the first growing season, and during severe droughts after first growing season. Native trees tend to be extremely tolerant once established.
Mature Growth Size: 25'-30' height, 20' spread
Note on Size: CAL refers to 'caliper' - a standard measurement of nursery trees that measures the width of the trunk, at about 6" from the base. 1.5"-2.5" CAL is the width at which most retail nursery trees are sold. This means your Serviceberry arrives already the size of a small tree.
Larger sizes of this item are available for order, but most homeowners find this size tree to be manageable without special equipment.
