Christmas ferns (Polystichum acrostichoides) are the happiest, most durable native ferns available in our area. Upright, spreading growth reaching 18"-30" tall. Evergreen once established (some die-back and new spring growth is to be expected - younger ferns can be expected to act like perennials in their first year if they encounter dry conditions or a cold winter, but send up new growth in the spring). Moderately paced naturalization means you will notice new 'babies' popping up around the original plant after a year or two, forming dense colonies of ferns over time. 
Prefers shade, and loamy soil, but Christmas fern is surprisingly adaptable in its home region: it can often be found growing on sun-drenched forest meadow slopes, and resists drought and deer. Fantastic as a native groundcover, or as accents in your woodland beds. 1 gallon pot. Available for delivery.
