Fast-growing, beautyberry usually grows to 5'-6' tall and wide, but can reach 9' in the right conditions.
However, this deciduous shrub is best known for its eponymous berries: clusters of metallic purple berries (sometimes a pale lavender to white) emerge close to the stems in late summer, remaining after the leaves drop in the fall & providing winter interest. These berries are loved by birds, and other small wildlife (backyard chickens also seem to love them!), making beautyberry a bird magnet throughout the fall and winter. The summer flowers preceding the berries are a great nectar source for butterflies.
Prefers consistently moist soil, and dappled shade. Low water needs once established, but prolonged summer drought can cause leaf drop. New growth emerges from old wood, but this shrub can be pruned down to 12" above the ground right before spring growth emerges, to refresh or shape an older shrub.
Fantastic planted en masse as a woodland understory plant, or as an accent plant in woodland beds. 3 Gallon pot size, available to order.
